Recirculation Pumps can be used to provide instant hot water at a faucet or from radiant floors using water or a glycol type liquid for floor warming.

Armstrong is a leader in pump technology and these pumps are made in New York and Canada in the Buffalo / Niagara area.

Used with a tankless heater, the recirculation pump circulates water from a small tank heater within a loop to each faucet. The pump can have a timer

and a temperature sensor so the loop stays warm but the mini tank water heater is not on all the time. When a faucet is turned on, the tankless heater sees the flow and turns on and the heated water flows through a check valve and to the open faucet.

Armstrong has an all in one system called the ASTRO EXPRESS. The Astro Express System works like a thermostat.The snap-acting valve opens and closes to circulate hot water so it stays at a specific temperature throughout the distribution system. Hot water at each tap stays hot, and cold water stays cold.

A timer automatically ensures that the water is recirculated regularly; and can be set for multiple activation periods per day. It can be set to circulate water only during normal usage hours (i.e. not in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep). The timer includes manual on/off overrides to normal automatic operation.

Each system comes with one valve, which is installed at the faucet furthest away from the water heater. This ensures that hot water is delivered to all the faucets in between. A home that has a distribution line with a number of branches, will need a valve for the faucet at the end of each branch. Additional valves are available separately

The control knob on the left is the Power control knob and allows you to set the height of the burners for hotter temperatures or cooler temperatures. As the temperature adjustment knob is turned counter-clockwise, the output temperature will lower and the activation rate of the heater will be raised. Turning the knob clockwise will raise the temperature and lower the activation rate.

Bosch Aquastar 125B Water Valve Assemblys

The Bosch Aquastar 125B gas tankless water heater was first manufactored back in the late 1980's. The 125B series has since been discontinued and replaced with newer compact models such as the 1600P gas tankless water heater.

When the Bosch Aquastar 125B model first came out, it had a dual port brass watervalve and then years later the Bosch Aquastar 125B series heater had a new single port polymer water valve which was much easier to service and maintain.

The replacement watervalve for the 125B series heater that had a dual port brass watervalve assembly is now a single port polymer watervalve retrofit kit. This watervalve assembly retrofit kit is required for any heater with a serial number beginning with 380 or lower. This kit includes new cold and hot water pipes, washers and the single port polymer watervalve so that it can be easily installed in the place of the old brass water valve. Gas Tankless in Bedrooms/Bathrooms

All of the Bosch gas tankless water heaters that are naturally drafting such as the 1000P, 1600P and the 1600H take thier combustion air that is needed to fire the heater from the location they are installed in. These heaters can never be installed in a bedroom or bathroom where the door is normally kept closed. This is against the National Fuel Gas Code and is very dangerous as the heater would deplete all of the oxygen in the room and will cause serious illness or death.

Per the National Fuel Gas Code manual, the only exception to having a naturally drafting gas tankless water heater installed in a bedroom or bathroom is if it is installed in a closet that has self closing hinges and that is sealed when it closes as to not take its combustion air from the bedroom or bathroom. The gas tankless water heater in the closet would then have to be able to get its combustion air from another source such as from the main part of the home, the attic area or from the outside. The amount of combustion air required for the gas tankless heater would be determined per the installation manual and vents to other sources of fresh air would have to be sized accordingly.

Direct vent gas tankless water heaters such as the Bosch 2400ES/2700ES are sealed combustion units and have the ability to take the intake air from the outside. These direct vent heaters are the only ones approved to be installed in a bedroom or bathroom. These heaters have a twin pipe system for the exhaust/intake air to the outside. If these heaters are to be installed in a bedroom or bathroom then the intake air for the heater must come from the outside.

2011 Federal Tax Credit for Tankless Water Heaters

The US Federal Government has extended the tax credit for tankless water heaters through December 31, 2011. However, the tax credit program has changed.

For certain Energy Star tankless water heaters purchased and put in service from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011 the Federal Tax Credit is 10% up to a maximum of $300. This tax credit includes the cost of the parts as well as the installation costs for your new tankless water heater.

In order to qualify for this federal tax credit, your tankless water heater must have an Energy Factor of at least .82 or a Thermal Efficiency of of 90%.

The Bosch AquaStar 2700ES is Energy Star rated and qualifies for the 2011 Federal Tax Credit for tankless water heaters. The Bosch AquaStar 27400ES is Energy Star rated and also qualifies for the 2011 Federal Tax Credit.

Bosch Tankless Water Heater Reviews

Occasionally our customers tell us that they are ready to make their Bosch tankless water heater purchase but they have a question about comments or reviews they have read on the internet. We too have read these reviews and so has Bosch.

Many of the online reviews are quite positive and this is consistent with the feedback we get from most of our Bosch tankless water heater customers. Some online reviews are negative and we have talked through these issues directly with Bosch.

Of the negative Bosch tankless water heater reviews that are posted on the internet most of these customers are do-it-yourself (DIY) customers who have not installed the product per the instructions in the installation manual!

The two most common mistakes made during the installation of a tankless water heater have to do with either the venting or the gas line (natural gas or liquid propane).

The installation manual for each Bosch tankless water heater specified the venting material that must be used to properly vent the gas tankless water heater. Read these instructions and follow them closely. The instructions must be followed in order to have your tankless hot water heater work properly, to maintain your warranty and to protect the health and safety of you and your family.

As for the gas line, this is probably the single-most common reason that customers do not get the proper performance out of their tankless water heater! Many older tank model heaters can get away with small diameter gas lines because they have a lower BTU/hr input. Remember that tank style heaters use a smaller amount of propane at a time, but they are going on and off all day long. Tankless water heaters use a larger amount of gas at once but they are only on when you demand hot water.

The properties of running natural gas or propane through a pipe are well known and well documented. They are not specific to the manufacturer of the tankless water heater. But, you must carefully size your gas line to ensure that it can provide the maximum BTU/hr input of your tankless water heater. Additionally, you must ensure that your gas line is properly sized to provide for running your furnace or other gas products at the same time as your tankless water heater is running.

The proper tool for measuring gas pressure is a manometer. Make sure that you or your installer have a manometer at the time of installation. This will save you from having to bring your installer back later!

When customers undersize their gas lines their tankless water heater will either under-perform or not work at all. Most of the negative customer postings on the internet are actually from home owners who simply did not provide enough gas pressure to their heater.

Unfortunately, many customers purchase their tankless water heaters from sources that are truly not qualified to sell the products and are unable to provide their customers with this key information on venting and gas line sizing. Always purchase your tankless water heater from an Authorized Distributor.

The TSTAT2 Wireless Remote Control is designed to remotely control just the temperature of your Bosch tankless water heater. It does not have a reset button.

Installation is quick and easy. It just requires opening up the control panel, dropping in a small circuit board and connecting the circuit board to the control panel mother board with a short connector wire. The installation manual describes the process of getting your TSTAT2 to sync with your Bosch hot water heater.

Multiple TSTAT2 wireless remotes can be sync'ed with the same Bosch water heater. Temperature control cannot be adjusted while the water heater is in use for safety reasons.

The Bosch wireless remote is great for controlling the output temperature of your tankless water heater if you have a jacuzzi or hot tub. It can also be handy if you want to crank up the water temperature when running certain appliances, such as your dishwasher.

Generally speaking, you want to set your water temperature at the lowest level that will provide you with hot enough water for your shower. The lower the water temperature, the faster the water flows through your Bosch tankless water heater. The faster the water flows through the heater, the less likely that you will experience any on/off cycles if your application flow rate is too near the minimum activation rate of your hot water heater.

Also, why heat up water too hot to use and then have to cool it down seconds later because it is too hot? Lowering the temperature will save you money. There are 91,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units) per each gallon of Liquid Propane (LP) gas.

Depending on which model gas tankless water heater you have that is running off LP gas you could get a close estimate on the amount of LP gas that would be consumed on a daily basis.

For example:
If you had a Bosch 1000P LP gas tankless water heater that has a maximum potential to deliver 74,900 BTUs at its highest fire you could calculate the usage of gallons per minute (GPMs) versus the BTU usage at that rate of burn and get the amount of time it would take to use 1 gallon of LP gas.

Say you run the 1000P LP gas tankless water heater 1 time a day just for a shower. The shower flows exactly 2 GPMs so the tankless water heater would be running at about 74,000 BTUs during this time and then figure on an average you stay in the shower for 10 minutes total time so overall you would burn about 1 gallon of LP gas for every 7-8 showers.

These calculations would vary depending on consistent flow and water pressure, length of time the water is running, the temperature outside will have an effect on the tank and gas pressure and also what BTU the heater is running at that time.

Basically this is an estimate for calculating usage of LP gas with a gas tankless water heater. This data is for example only and will hold no bearing on any Bosch tankless water heater as they all vary in BTU usage.

Descaling Powerstar AE-115 & AE-125

The electric tankless water heaters, Powerstar models AE115 and AE125 are high kilowatt electric tankless heaters that heat water on demand as the water passes through them. The modules inside consist of coiled elements that heat the water. The heating elements produce extreme heat inside the modules to heat the water on demand.

The heat that is produced by the heating elements in the modules sometimes counteracts with the mineral deposits in the water. If there is a high mineral content due to a hard water area then these mineral deposits known as "scale deposits" will over time attach themselves to the heating coils inside the modules.

All Bosch Powerstar electric tankless water heaters should never be descaled with any type of solution such as vinegar, muriatic acid, etc. The use of descalants flushed through the heater does not have much effect on the mineral deposits attached to the elements. Another point of trying to flush descalant through an electric tankless heater is that it will loosen some of the mineral deposits in the heater and will have a damaging effect on the flow transducer and other parts inside the tankless heater that detects the flow of water and will interrupt the signal to the circuit board itself.

The best protection against mineral deposits (scale) forming on the coils in the electric tankless heater is to check the quality of the water in your area before installing and if the water has a high mineral content then it is recommended to install a water softener or scale stopper system. The water softener or scale stopper will filter out almost all of the minerals and treat the water so the electric tankless water heater will have a longer life with less minerals building up inside.

PCB Control Boards for Powerstar AE-115 & AE-125

The PCB control board (Printed Circuit Board) is a thermostatically controlled circuit board that allows the electric tankless water heater, model AE115 & AE125 to be manually controlled by a temperature dial that would range in temperature from 86-131 degrees. The PCB in conjunction with a flow transducer enables the PCB to turn on additional elements in the heater as necessary depending on the amount of gallons per minute (gpm) flowing through the heater.

The PCB would recognize many factors in the function of the heater to maintain a steady temperature and all of this is determined on where the temperature knob is set too, the gpm flowing through the heater and the temperature of the incoming ground water.

To obtain the maximum heating potential of the Powerstar electric tankless water heater, it must be wired correctly and have the full required voltage to the unit. The Powerstar AE115 would require 2 independent double pole 40 amp breakers wired with 8 gauge wire and could draw a maximum of 80 amps at full flow through the heater. The Powerstar AE115 would require the home to be supplied with a minimum of a 150 amp service. The Powerstar AE125 would require 3 independent double pole 40 amp breakers wired with 8 gauge wire and could draw a maximum of 120 amps at full flow through the heater. The Powerstar AE125 would require the home to be supplied with a minimum of a 200 amp service.

The maximum inlet water temperature allowed into the heater is 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Powerstar AE-115 & AE-125 have had many upgrades and engineering improvements over the years. In January 2007 the AE-115 & AE-125 went from having copper canisters that contain the heating elements to an upgraded Polymer module. The PCB control board was also upgraded to maintain a more steady temperature that works with the heating elements in the polymer modules.

The Powerstar AE-115 is designed for 1 major application at a time and is recommended for installation in homes that are in the southern regions of the United States as the incoming ground water is warmer giving the heater a higher temperature degree rise.

The Powerstar AE-125 is designed for 1 major application and 1 sink at a time and is recommended for installation in homes that are in the northern region of the United States where the incoming ground water is cooler and this heater will be able to give a higher degree temperature rise.

Sine Wave Inverters for Off-Grid Tankless Installations

For Bosch tankless water heater customers who are off-grid and whose water heaters require a 120VAC connection for the electronic ignition or the power vent, we sometimes get questions about Sine Wave Inverters.

As long as the sine wave is an Uninterupted Power Supply (UPS) at 120VAC constant then the heater should be fine. All of the heaters that require 120VAC should work fine.

If a battery back up system is to provide power to a Bosch tankless water heater in case of a power outage, the back up battery system must be able to produce a pure sine-wave voltage output to the heater. APC (American Power Conversion Corporation) is one of the companies that offer a line of battery back up systems that produce a pure sine-wave voltage called Smart UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply).

The APC Smart UPS 750VA or above (SUA750) will produce a pure sine-wave voltage output that is compatible with the Bosch tankless water heaters.

Here are some generic Z-Vent Installation Tips and Hints directly from the vendor:

A venting system that exits the structure through a sidewall or the like, shall terminate not less than 12 inches (254 mm) above the ground.
The termination of a system shall be located above the snow line in geographical areas where snow accumulates. The termination area should be kept clear of snow and ice at all times.
The vent shall not terminate less than 7 ft. (2.13 m) above a paved sidewalk or driveway.
The termination shall be 6 ft. (1.8m) or more from the combustion air intake of any appliance.
The system shall terminate more than 3 ft. (.91 m) from any other building opening, gas utility meter, service regulator or the like.
Exterior mounted venting systems should be enclosed below the roof line with a chase to limit condensation and protect against mechanical failure.

Always refer to your tankless water heater or boiler's Installation Manual as their requirement may differ from these Z-Vent Tips.

AE 115 and AE 125 Heaters and control

Many times we have been asked if the Bosch AE115 and AE125 can accept pre heated water. The answer is no.

The reason lies in how the unit controls the temperature. These large KW whole house tankless water heaters are designed to take cool water and heat the water to shower temperature as the water passes through the heater. The heater turns on as flow is detected and turns off when the water flow ceases.

There is a temperature sensor on the inlet water pipe (cold) and a sensor on the outlet pipe (hot). The switch that turns the heater on is a solid state style switch or SCR switch. This type of switch has no moving parts and is very reliable. However, SCR or solid state switches generate heat as they switch electrical current. To cool these switches, they have been located on the inlet (cold) water inlet. So the copper pipes act as a heat sink for the SCR switches. If hot water is passed through the pipes and the heater turns on the SCR switches could over heat and FAIL.

Bosch 2700ES Vs. Bosch Pro 715ES - A Comparison

The Bosch AquaStar 2700ES tankless hot water heater is similar in many respects to the Bosch Pro 715ES tankless hot water heater.

They are both 199,000 BTU tankless water heaters and they both sit in the same chassis or case - the new "World 2" case.

Both have modulating gas valves and have the same .65 GPM minimum activation rate.

There are a few key differences between the two heaters, though.

One key difference is that the Bosch 2700ES comes with built-in freeze protection. This freeze protection is meant to keep the heater from freezing in locatons that experience occasional overnight freezes. The Bosch Pro 715ES does not come with this freeze protection -- but it is an optional accessory that you can pay extra for.

Another difference between these two heaters is the water filter.

In the Bosch 2700ES tankless hot water heater the water filter comes with the heater and is very easily accessible without having to even remove the cover. As you can see from this image, (1) is the water filter.

Bosch recommends that you inspect and clean the water filter once per year as part of your annual maintenance of the heater.

With the Bosch Pro 715ES, the water filter is an optional accessory - albeit a highly recommended accessory!

The Bosch Pro 715ES is a wholesale product that is meant to be sold directly to an installer. It is designed to be professionally installed. As such, it comes with a 15 year warranty. The Bosch 2700ES is a retail product that is meant to be sold directly to home owners and it comes with a 12 year warranty.

Z-Flex 3" Termination Options for Bosch 2700ES/2400ES Tankless Water Heaters

We stock the full line of Z-Flex Z-Vent 3" and 4" stainless steel vent pipe. There are a variety of termination options for both the 3" and 4" venting.

All of our termination pieces come with a built-in bird screen to ensure that birds and other critters cannot get into your venting system.

The AQ3ES Side Wall Vent Kit for the Bosch 2700ES and 2400ES tankless water heaters comes with the 3" Termination Box with a 10" sleeve (2SVSTB03). This special OEM part is exactly the same as the Z-Flex part 2SVSRTF03. The 2SVSTB03 and the 2SVSRTF03 can both also be used for intake air.

If you have vinyl siding then you do not want to use the 2SVSTB03 or 2SVSRTF03 Termination Box as the hot exhaust gases may melt your vinyl siding. The recommended part for vinyl siding is the 3" Termination Hood (2SVSHTX03). This part can also be used for intake air.

We also sell the 3" Termination Hood with Damper (2SVSHTD03), but this part is not approved for either the Bosch 2700ES or Bosch 2400ES tankless heaters. The concern is that if the damper gets frozen shut then the exhaust gases cannot escape. The 3" Termination Hood with Damper cannot ever be used for intake air!

We carry the 3" Termination Coupling (2SVSTPF03). This will exhaust the gases straight out from your house, so safety is a concern when using this part for exhaust. This part can be used for either exhaust or intake.

The 3" Termination Tee (2SVSTTF03) exhausts the gases out in two directions. This part can also be used for intake air.

The 3" Termination Elbow (2SVSTEX0390) will shoot the exhaust gases out in a single direction. This part can also be used for intake air.

Today we received a call from a customer who was looking for 4" stainless steel vent pipe for his Noritz 0751 Series Residential Tankless Water Heater.

He wanted to purchase Z-Flex vent pipe and wanted to know the correct venting adaptor for this heater. He also wanted to know how to connect the Z-Flex exhaust to his Noritz VT4-TL Sealed Combustion Long Vent Termination.

The correct Z-Flex adaptor for the Noritz 751M-DV tankless water heater is the 4" Noritz Adaptor (2SVWA04). This adaptor connects directly to the heater and allows you to exhaust with Z-Flex 4" stainless steel vent pipe.

The Z-Flex Stainless Steel Vent Pipe connects directly to the Noritz VT4-TL Sealed Combustion Long Vent Termination.

ESHCK Concentric Vent Kit for Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES

Bosch has recently approved the ESHCK Concentric Vent Kit for the Bosch AquaStar 2700ES, 2400ES and 715ES tankless water heaters.

The ESHCK side wall concentric vent kit is actually a shell piece of stainless steel venting that will work with vent pipe manufactured by Z-Flex, ProTech Industries or Heat-Fab. (Of course, we always recommend using Z-Flex stainless steel AL29-4C vent pipe.)

Part number ESHCK is a 5" diameter shell through which you can stick a 3" x 3' piece of stainless steel vent pipe. This piece of straight pipe is terminated by either a Termination Tee or a Termination Elbow. The ESHCK shell that fits around this straight pipe creates the air intake vent pipe.

The air intake from the Bosch 2700ES, 2400ES or 715ES tankless water heater can be run using PVC and connects directly to the ESHCK. The air intake port on the ESHCK can be rotated 360 degrees around the ESHCK to bring the combustion air in from any angle. Bosch recommends that you bring the air in from the top, particularly in areas that are prone to freezing.

The ESHCK is actually 20" long, but when you stick the 3" x 3' pipe and the termination piece through the ESHCK then the total length of the ESHCK Vent Kit is about 41" long. When you add the required 3" x 90 degree elbow the total length is about 47" long. The square flashing that rests against the outside wall is 8" square.

Bosch requires that the termination tee or termination elbow be a full 12" away from your exterior wall. This is meant to ensure that the exhaust air does not get recylcled back through the air intake. Don't go beyone the 12" either as this may increase your potential for condensation in the exposed pipe section.

We sell a complete kit called the ESHCK-FULL-KIT Concentric Vent Kit that includes the ESHCK shell, a 3" x 90 degree elbow, a 3" x 3' stick of pipe and a termination tee.

Please note that this concentric vent kit will protrude quite a bit through the inside wall making it very difficult for you to mount the tankless water heater on the same wall that you are venting out of. The easiest way to use this ESHCK concentric vent kit is to mount your tankless water heater on a wall that is perpendicular from the wall that you are venting out of.

With this configuration, you will need a 90 degree elbow coming off of your water heater. Then we recommend using a horizontal drain pipe to catch any condensate that gets generated. Then you may need additoinal straight pipe to connect up to the ESHCK concentric vent kit which protrudes from the wall.

If you do want to do and "up and out" venting through the same wall you mount the heater on with the ESHCK then you will need to install your 2700ES or 2400ES tankless water heater out away from the wall. This will help you avoid using an excessive number of 90 degree elbows.

One of the big advantages of using the ESHCK concentric vent kit is that you only have to have a single hole through your exterior wall. This may greatly reduce your installation costs if you have a difficult wall to drill through, such as a thick stone wall.

Another advantage of using the concentric vent kit is that for some installations it is impossible to meet the 3' distance requirement between the exhaust and the air intake.

Aesthetically it may also be more desireable to have a single vent through your outside wall.

Selecting tankless hot water heaters isn't very difficult. Select one based on the maximum amount of hot water to meet your peak demand. Use the following assumptions on flow for various appliances to find the size of unit that is right for your purposes: Faucets: 1.0 gallons (3.78 liters) to 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) per minute.

Low-flow showerheads: 1.0 gallons (3.78 liters) to 2 gallons (7.57 liters) per minute. Older standard shower heads: 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) to 3.0 gallons (11.36 liters) per minute.

Clothes washers and dishwashers: 1 gallon (3.79 liters) to 2 gallons (7.57 liters) per minute.

Unless you know otherwise, assume that the incoming temperature is 55° F (12.78° C). You will want your water heated to 110° F (43.33° C) for most uses. To determine how much of a temperature rise you need, subtract the incoming temperature from the desired output temperature. In this example, the needed rise is 55° F (12.78° C).

List the number of hot water devices you expect to have open at any one time, and add up their flow rates. This is the desired flow rate for the heater. Selecting a tankless water heater is nearly impossible without knowing the flow rate you need.

As an example, assume the following conditions: One hot faucet open with a flow rate of 1.0 gallons (3.79 liters) per minute. One person bathing using a shower head with a flow rate of 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) per minute. Add the two flow rates together. If the inlet water temperature is 55° F (12.78° C), the needed flow rate through the heater would need to be no greater than 3.5 gallons (13.25 liters) per minute. Faster flow rates or cooler inlet temperatures will reduce the temperature at the most distant faucet.

Installation of un-sealed gas utilization equipment in bedrooms, bathrooms or any occupied rooms with doors normally kept closed is prohibited by standards set forth in the National Fuel Gas Code. These standards conform to all known building codes throughout North America and are included in your product installation manual.

Oxygen deprivation and carbon monoxide poisoning are serious health risks that can result from such installations, due largely to the lack of combustion and ventilation air present in enclosed spaces. Premature appliance failure is also a consequence of lack of combustion and ventilation air. Bosch Outdoor Tankless Water Heater Clearances

Question: The specifications for installing a Bosch outdoor tankless water heater call for a minimum 4' clearance from any doors or windows. Why is this? And, do all manufacturer's have to adhere to this same standard?

Answer: The 4 foot figure is based on code. National Fuel Gas Code says (Section 10.8.2): “A mechanical draft venting system of other than direct vent type shall terminate at least 4 ft below, 4 ft horizontally from, or 1 ft above any door, operable window, or gravity air inlet into any building.”

And, yes, all manufacturer's of outdoor tankless water heaters must adhere to this same National Fuel Gas Code.

Energy Factor vs. Thermal Efficiency for Tankless Water Heaters

Thermal Efficiency only takes into account (essentially) how effectively you're burning fuel or turning fuel into heat. The Energy Factor then also takes into account things such as standby heat losses in a tank. So a tank may sometimes burn fuel efficiently but then lose some of that heat at standby. The Energy Factor is always going to be equal to or less than the efficiency.

The term ‘Energy Factor’ characterizes the efficiency of both tank and tankless water heaters. The Energy Factor is the portion of the energy going into the water heater that gets turned into usable hot water under average conditions. It takes into account heat loss through the walls of the tank, up the flue, and in combustion. The higher the Energy Factor, the more efficient the heater.

Because tankless water heaters don’t have the losses associated with tanks, their Energy Factors are normally higher (although well-insulated, ultra-efficient tank heaters also have high Energy Factors). Energy Factors for gas tankless water heaters range from around 0.69 to 0.84, compared with 0.55 for a conventional tank and 0.86 for an ultra-efficient tank heaters.

Conventional electric tank water heaters have an Energy Factor of about 0.87 compared with 0.91 for an ultra-efficient tank and 0.98 for electric tankless heaters.

One question we often get asked by customers who want to vent out through the side wall is whether or not they can use additional 3" stainless steel venting parts on the outside of their homes. Most often these customers want to vent out the side wall and then use a 3" 90 degree elbow to then add vertical vent pipe to bring the venting termination point higher up the side of their home.

Gas codes do not allow vent pipe to run along the outside of the house in cold climates due to condensation problems and interference with draft. The heaters are designed for sidewall termination only (not sidewall penetration with vent continuing outside).

The likely outcome of installing in cold climates with additional outdoor piping will be significant condensation leading to heater damage, particularly to the gas valve. Theoretically, adding extra condensate drains would help reduce the chances for this type of damage, but Bosch does not recommend rigging up extra drains for what would be an improper install in the first place.

You may consider building an insulated exterior chase to run vertical vent pipe through. Consult your local Gas Code to see if this is allowed. When heaters are not installed according to Gas Codes then they are generally not covered by a warranty.

Mini-Tank Heating ~ Ariston GL2.5, GL4, GL6+

The Ariston mini tanks, GL2.5, GL4 and GL 6 are just that, tank water heaters.

They do not heat up water as the water flow through the heater, that would be a TANKLESS or inline water heater. We do get calls asking if the mini tanks can be used for showers or inline applications, they usually cannot be.

One question is how long does it take to recharge these heaters. the formula for heating water is :

kw/h=weight x change in temperature x specific heat/3413 (btu's / kw).

To figure weight, use 8.3 pounds per gallon. Most ground water is about 55 - 60 degrees, and the desired temperature is usually about 122. Our change is temperature is about 70 degrees. The specific heat or water is 1.

So the kw required to heat 2.5 gallons to 122 degrees in one hour would be 425 watts or .425 kw.

Since the GL2.5 ( and GL4 and GL 6) utilizes a 1500 watt element, it would take about 22 minutes to heat the mini-tank to you 122 degrees F.

We can also figure out the GL4 and GL6 using the same formula.

The GL4 would take about 35 minutes to heat up to 122 degrees F.

The GL6 would take about an hour to heat up to 122 degrees F.

If the inlet water temperature is 70 degrees the times to heat up the tanks are:

Ariston GL2.5 = 15 minutes

Ariston GL4 = 20 minutes

Ariston GL6+ = 30 minutes

All figures are rounded and approximate and the heating elements can be +/- 7% in wattage in the actual tanks as well as voltage fluctuations can affect heat up times.

The ARISTON mini-tanks are best suited for sinks for hand washing and also can be used to provide "instant" hot water water to a shower while waiting for the hot water to arrive from the main hot water source like a tankless heater located in a basement.

The FXHOOOD is required by Bosch whenever a customer installs the Bosch AquaStar 125FX Tankless Water Heater. It is also required for the older 240FX model.

The FX Hood is a horizontal vent terminator with built-in freeze protection for the Bosch AquaStar 125FX and 240FX models as well as the Takagi T-K1 Tankless Water Heater. The FX Hood will prevent cold air from freezing the heat exchanger on the Bosch AquaStar Tankless Water Heaters. The back draft preventer (FX Hood) should be used with all electronic ignition gas tankless water heaters where the outside temperature can fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Bosch FXHOOD is doubled-piped so it can be installed next to combustible materials. The face plate is 12 inches by 12 inches and the pipe is 8 inches in diameter with the inner pipe being 4 inches in diameter.

Ariston GL6+ Used for a Shower?

A common question we get is whether or not the Ariston GL6+ mini-tank electric water heater can be used for a single shower stall.

Here is our answer:

The GL 6 is a TANK heater and holds about 6 gallons of hot water. A standard shower uses between 2 and 2.5 gpm of water. This will mean that you can get a 2-3 minute shower if the water is kept on.

Also, since it is a tank (albeit a mini-tank), as you start to use the hot water, the tank will be back-filled with ambient temperature water, thus cooling it down. The GL6+ is designed for sinks for hand and dish washing or to be used inline with a tankless water heater to give instant hot water while waiting for the hot water to arrive from the main water source.

We do not think that the Ariston Gl6+ mini-tank will work well for a single stall shower for most people.

Our PowerStar AE12 heater will work for a low flow shower with input water temps of 60 or more. This heater is a 50 amp heater and requires 220/240 volts.

Electric Tankless Heaters

Electric tankless heaters seem to cause some confusion in the market place due to their high amperage (current draw) and limited 120 volt heaters. All tankless heaters are not direct drop in replacements for tank heaters. Tankless usually require an infrastructure change to accommodate the requirements for tankless heaters.

First off, water is a very difficult material to heat. It takes twice the amount of heat to heat water than oil and 10 times the amount of heat to heat water over metals. Tank heaters have smaller amount of heat input than tankless as they use a time factor to get the water up to temperature. the first time a tank heater is turned on, it can take up to 2-6 hours to get to temperature depending on tank size and heat input and insulation on the tank. Once installed and turned on the tank is constantly trying to keep the water at temperature. The formula for knowing how to heat water is:

kilowatts/hour = (mass x temperature change) / 3413 (btu's per KW)

If we look at a standard 50 gallon tank for example, the formula is:

10 = (415 x 80)/3413

10 kw will heat the tank in 1 hour.

Now, 10 kw requires 41 amps running on 240 volts.

Common breaker sizes are 30 amps, so a tank heater usually has 6 or 7.5 kw input to stay under the 30 amp breaker size. which will increase the time to heat the tank.

Tankless heaters have to heat the water as it passes through the heater, thus much more heat input is required. Our whole house heater has a heat input rating of 27 kw. At this heat input the heater will raise the temperature 45 degrees at a flow rate of 4.0 gpm. If the flow rate is reduced to 2.5 gpm the heat rise will be about 65 degrees. This heater has three 9 kw heating modules and thus each module requires 40 amps to operate. This means that a total of 120 amps ( 240 volts) is required to operate the heater. This is significant power requirements. the difference is the time factor has been removed from the tank equation.

Amps are defined by the wattage divided by the voltage. Lower amps mean smaller breaker sizes and smaller wire sizes. This reduces costs and panel sizes. This is why electrical appliances such as ovens, dryers and water heaters utilize 220-240 volts in lieu of 120 volts (1/2 the amps) for their power requirements.

Will tankless save on electricity? The answer is Yes.

In electrical terms, a tank heater can use between 60,000 watts to 75,000 watts per day to keep water hot. Our 27,000 watt heater will use about 27,000 watts per day. That is a significant reduction. A tank heater can be on up to 10 hours a day keeping water hot. A 6kw heater times 10 hours is 60kw or 60,000 watts. The tankless heater is NOT on except when hot water is called for. A normal usage for a home is about an hour per day. Of course, when you are not home, there will be NO usage with a tankless heater. Most home owners do not turn off their tank water heater and are thus using power even when no one is home.

I use an electric tankless heater and it works great, we have set the temperature at 108 and it is more than hot enough and the showers can be endless. We did have to install a new panel to handle the breakers and increased amperes required.

In summary, it is simple physics as to why a tankless heater has such large KW and amp requirements, water is just difficult to heat and it needs a "muscle car' to do it with an on-demand or tankless heater. Save money and install an electric tankless heater.

Bosch 1600H with AQ4 vs. Bosch 125FX with FXHood

If you have just one shower and are looking to vent out of the sidewall, Bosch currently offers two tankless water heater solutions.

The Bosch AquaStar 125FX Propane tankless water heater is a 125,000 BTU input tankless water heater (130,000 BTU for Natural Gas model) that has an electronic ignition system. The 125FX comes with a side-wall vent kit called the FX Hood. This heater is designed to be vented out of the side wall and it cannot be vented up through the roof. The 125FX requires electricity to power the electronic ignition and FXHood.

The Bosch AquaStar 1600H is a 117,000 BTU input tankless water heater that is designed to be vented up through the roof. It uses Bosch's patented Hydro ignition system that automatically starts the ignition process when it senses the flow of water. The Bosch 1600H does not require electricity nor does it have a battery. It also has NO PILOT LIGHT. It does require a 5" diameter Type B double-walled vent of at least 6 feet in height when vented vertically.

The Bosch 1600H can be vented through the side wall using the AQ4 Vent Kit. However, please note that the AQ4 Horizontal Vent Kit DOES require electricity. (The AQ4 Vent Kit can also be used for the Bosch 1600P tankless water heater.)

In summary, Bosch offers two solid tankless water heater options for single shower homes requiring side wall venting.

Bosch AquaStar 1000P Gas Point-of-Use Tankless Water Heater

The Bosch AquaStar 1000P gas tankless water heater is a point-os-use water heater designed to provide instant hot water for two sinks. It can, in some locals be used to provide hot water for a single shower.

The Bosch 1000P can deliver 2.5 GPM of hot water at a 45 degree F temperature rise. A regular shower head delivers about 2.5GPM, so the Bosch 1000P is right on the edge for delivering water for a hot shower.

However, if you live in a warm climate, such as Texas, Southern California, Florida, Arizona, etc, then you probably do not need to raise the water temperature by 45 degrees, so the 1000P can work for a single shower.

Also, if you use a low-flow shower head that reduces your flow to say 1.5GMP, then again you can have a hot shower with the Bosch 1000P.

We would not recommend the Bosch AquaStar 1000P for a regular flow shower head in New York -- it just will not be able to keep up and provide you with a hot shower.

The Bosch 1000P replaced the older Bosch 38B. But the 38B only delivered about 1GPM at the same 45 degree F temperature rise. So, the 1000P really is a much stronger water heater than the 38B ever was!

The Bosch 1000P comes in both Natural Gas and Propane models.

Gas Lights - Preformed Mantles vs. Tie On Mantles

Paulin / Humphrey manufactures Gas Lights for homes, cabins and cottages. The lights are usually run on LP propane gas but can be run on natural gas NG with the correct orifice. The biggest question is usually which kind of mantle should be used. There are three types, Pre-Formed, Tie on and clip on. the clip on mantles are the least used, but are simialr to the tie on for usage.

The general rule of thimb is to use the tie on mantles in applications where the lights are moved (not permanent). This would included ice fishing shacks, trailers, and campers. The reason for this is the tie on mantles are less suseptible to breakage when moved. And if they are broken or destroyed they cost less to replace. The movement or dragging of a trailer or Ice shack can cause the mantles to break. The downside is that the tie on mantles are not as bright.

The preformed mantles are designed for permanent locations such as cottages. They can provide about the same light as a 60 watt light bulb and can last for years. However, once lit they are very fragile. Do not touch the mantle or blow on it. If treated gently then the mantle will last for a long time. Even with a small hole or tear the mantle will burn well.

Our number 9 mantles will work on the older # 8 lamps.

Another sidelight, you can change lights to preformed or tie on by changing the burner noses. When changing a burner nose make sure to also replace the gaskets (seals) as they tend to break during a change. FYI - a tie on mantle can be used on a preformed lamp, but a preformed mantle cannot be used on a tie on lamp.

Tankless Solutions for Mobile, Modular and Manufactured Homes

Bosch Gas Tankless Water Heaters are NOT approved for mobile homes.

We get calls all the time from customers who tell us that their mobile home is permanently on blocks or that their double-wide is HUD approved and never going to be moved.

None of this changes the fact that these are still mobile homes, and the Bosch Gas Tankless Water Heaters are simply NOT approved for this application.

The basic reasoning for this is that these homes are pretty well air
tight. They also may not stay in the same location over the period of
their life time so they need to be gas type convertible. A mobile home is defined in the definition section of the ANSI standard and among other things must be on a "permanent chassis."

On the other hand, the Bosch Gas Tankless Water Heaters ARE approved for modular homes. Although Modular Homes are built in prefabricated pieces, they are assembled on site and are considered the same as traditional stick-built homes when it comes to the approvals for tankless water heaters.

There is some question on the approval status for Bosch tankless water heaters for Manufactured Homes. Bosch recommends that you seek local code approval before you move forward with a Bosch tankless solution for Manufactured Homes.

The Bosch 1600PS Solar Tankless Water Heater is designed to take preheated water from a solar or wood heated system. It is the only Bosch AquaStar Tankless Water Heater that can take preheated water as input!

The "P" in the product name indicates that the Bosch 1600PS has a pilot light for its ignition system. The "S" stands for solar.

The Bosch 1600PS has the same specifications as the Bosch 1600P, except for the fact that it can take preheated solar water.

One common question is whether the Bosch 1600PS tankless water heater can be used WITHOUT preheated solar water. The answer is Yes! So, if you do not currently have a solar system in place but are planning to get one, you can definately install the Bosch 1600PS now in advance of your solar system purchase.

Just like the Bosch 1600P, the 1600PS provides 4.3GPM at a 45 degree F temperature rise and has a low minimum activation rate of just 0.5GPM. Both heaters take a BTU input from 23,400 - 117,000 BTU input. Also, both the 1600PS and the 1600P take 5" double-wall, Type B galvanized venting.

Here are the steps for descaling your tankless water heater:

Disconnect power to water heater.

Close hot and cold isolation and service valves and remove service caps.

Pour 1.5 gallons of water into bucket and place under water heater.

Plug pump into grounded receptacle.

Allow pump to circulate Whitlam Flow-Aide solution through heater for 30-45 minutes. Unplug pump.

Close cold service valve. Remove hose from cold service valve, and replace service cap.

Disconnect the hose from the pump and remove pump from bucket. Discard Whitlam Flow-Aide solution.

Flush tankless water heater for 3-5 minutes or until water flows clear by opening the cold isolation valve and allowing water to exit through the hot service valve into a drain or bucket. If using a bucket, empty periodically.

Close hot service valve. Remove hose from service valve and replace service cap.

Open hot isolation valve.

Connect power to water heater and return appliance to service.

Isolaton Valve Kits (AKA Service Valves) are a great accessory for any tankless water heater purchase. They will save you money on the installation of your tankless water heater and they make future maintenenace of your tankless water heater both easy and convenient.

When you install your new tankless water heater you will certainly need both a hot water shutoff valve and a cold water shutoff valve. You will also need to plumb in a pressure relief valve (PRV).

With traditional tank heaters you can easily drain the tank for regular maintenance. But with tankless water heaters there is no drain to open up at the bottom. So, you will need some other plumbing strategy that will allow you easy access to the internal pipe of the tankless water heater.

Gas tankless water heaters have a single pipe that starts as the incoming water line, then wraps a bunch of times around the gas-fired heat exchanger and then exits as the hot water line. So, the only ways to maintain this water line is to either use a set of isolation valves or build in some extra valves and fittings to do the job. (Or course, you can always just dismantle your plumbing system, but that is not very convenient!)

We have been told time and again that the cost of the Isolation Valve Kit is less expensive than the many valves and fittings you would need to purchase to get the comparable functionality.

And, the labor to install the Isolation Valve Kit is much less than if you go without it!

Well, once you have your Isolation Valve Kit installed you are now in a positon to easily maintain your tankless water heater. With the Isolation Valve Kit in place you can easily run a Descaling Solution through the heater. Or, you can easily blow all of the water out of the line with compressed air if you need to stow your heater away for the winter.

In any case, planning ahead with an Isolation Valve Kit will have a big payoff.

AQ3ES Vent Kit Versus AQ3 Vent Kit

The AQ3ES Vent Kit is the current horizontal vent kit sold by Bosch for the Bosch AquaStar 2700ES and Bosch AquaStar 2400ES Tankless Water Heaters. This horizontal vent kit is required for all 2700ES and 2400ES installations that will be vented out the side wall.

The AQ3ES Vent Kit has all of the parts required by the 2700ES and 2400ES warranty for a safe and complete installation assuming that you are mounting your tankless water heater on the same side wall that you are venting out of.

The AQ3ES Vent Kit has a total of 40" of straight vent pipe -- 36" of straight vent pipe are required for installations in freezing areas. If you use less than 36" of straight vent pipe in freezing areas and your heat exchanger freezes and bursts it will not be covered under the Bosch warranty!

Please note that for the intake air on the Bosch 2700ES and Bosch 2400ES heaters you must use 3" rigid vent pipe, such as PVC.

In contrast, the AQ3 Vent Kit was designed for the older Bosch 250SX and Bosch 2400E tankless water heater models. Bosch did NOT require a rigid vent pipe for the intake air on these older models. So, the AQ3 Vent Kit comes with a 10' length of 3" flexible aluminum hose for the intake air. (This flex hose CANNOT be used on the newer Bosch 2700ES/2400ES models.)

Both vent kits come with a 3" x 90 degree elbow, a wall thimble, an exhaust termination box with a bird screen and an intake termination box with a bird screen.

Point-of-Use Electric Water Heating Options

GlobalTowne.com has three completely different options for home owners who are looking to get quick hot water to a distant location in their home using electricity: an electric tankless point-of-use water heater, an electric mini-tank water heater, or an electric recirculating pump.

Option 1 -- An Electric Tankless Point-of-Use Water Heater

Bosch offers 4 different electric tankless point-of-use water heaters: the PowerStar AE3.4, AE7.2, AE9.5 and AE12 models. Each of these four models indicates their respective kW in their name. Thus, the AE12 is a 12kW heater. The more kW, the more heating capability of the electric tankless point-of-use water heater. The more kW, the more amperage draw as well. Option 2 -- An Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater

Bosch offers three Ariston glass lined mini-tank water heaters at varying capacities: the Ariston GL2.5, GL 4 and GL6+. The Ariston electric mini-tank heaters keep hot water ready to use at the point-of-use. They act just like traditional large water tanks, except that they are very small and therefore use much less electricity. Option 3 - Recirculating Pumps

GlobalTowne offers two different kinds of recirculating pumps: Armstrong recirculating pumps and the Chilipepper CP6000. The Armstrong recirculating pump has a timer that allows you to set the hours of operation and a thermostat that allows you to keep the water at that temperature in the water line. Ariston GL6+ Mounting Options

The Ariston GL6+ mini-tank water heater has two mounting options: the GL6PLUS can be mounted either vertically or horizontally.

In contrast, the other two Ariston models -- the GL2.5 and the GL4 -- can only be mounted vertically.

When the Ariston GL6 PLUS is mounted vertically it holds 5.1 gallons of hot water. When it is mounted on its side it holds 7.1 gallons of hot water.

A common question regarding the Ariston GL6 is whether it can also be mounted on its back.

The answer is NO.

The T&P relief valve must always be on the top of the heater where the temperatures are hottest. With the heater on its back the T&P would be on the side, measuring a lower temperature.

Inside the heater, the cold water tube is longer than the hot water tube. This allows for "stratification" of water within the tank - cold water is delivered to the bottom of the tank and hot water (like hot air) rises. With the tank upright or on its side, the cold water is delivered to the lower portion of the tank and hot water is drawn off the top.

If the heater were placed on its back, cold water inlet and hot water outlet would be at the same level. The water at the top of the tank would be nice and hot, but you'd never be able to access it. The cold water would practically flow right through to the hot water side and result in lukewarm water at best.

Temperature Settings and Set Points for Tankless Heaters

Setting the Temperature on a tankless heater can be confusing. One would think that to get hotter water and thus have a better shower that increasing the set point or temperature setting on a water heater would be the best idea. BUT on a tankless heater this may not be the case. In most cases we want the set point temperature to be just above the useable water temperature for the household and this would be around 110 F.

If the Tankless heater is set for 125 F like most tank heaters, then the outlet temperature at the shower end will have to be adjusted or mixed with cold water to make a comfortable shower.

When the water is mixed the amount of water forced through the tankless heater is reduced, and if too much cold water is needed to temper the hot water then the flow rated though the heater may be reduced to below the minimum and the tankless heater will shut off. By setting the temperature closer to the useable temperature, there is more flow through the hot side of the system (through the heater) and thus keeps up any minimum flow requirements.

Tank heaters need higher settings so that the hot water in the tank "lasts longer" due to the mixing of cold water and to prevent bacteria from growing in the "stored" water.

Just because one sets a tankless heater to 125 or higher, the heater may not have the capability to reach that temperature due to heat input, flow rate or inlet water temperature. Every tankless heater has a maximum rise temperature based on the flow rate through the heater. The temperature setting will not increase this fact (as it it physics) and thus the temperature setting becomes a maximum setting or high limit. For example the Bosch 2400ES gas heater can heat a flow rate of 6.2 gpm 45 degrees F. If the inlet is 60 then the outlet would be 105 F no matter what the set point of the heater is above 105F.

General
AquaStar water heaters are warranted by the Bosch will furnish a replacement heat exchanger and will furnish a replacement of any other part which fails in normal use and service within the applicable periods specified below, in accordance with the terms of this warranty. The Bosch Water Heating replacement will be warranted for the unexpired portion of the original warranty. This warranty will be valid only for water heaters in possession of the original purchaser as recorded on the warranty card.

The Heat Exchanger
If the heat exchanger fails within twelve (12) years after the original installation and operation, Bosch Water Heating will furnish a replacement heat exchanger. However, if the water heater is installed in other than a single family dwelling, or is used as a circulating heater in any application, this heat exchanger warranty is limited to two (2) years from date of original installation and operation.

All Other Parts
If any other part fails within two (2) years after original installation and operation, Bosch Water Heating will furnish a replacement part free of charge.

Shipping Costs
In addition to supplying the replacement part(s), Bosch Water Heating will provide ground service delivery for these parts.Expedited or upgraded shipping will be charged to the customer.

Venting the Bosch 2700ES and 2400ES Tankless Heaters

There are three venting options for the Bosch 2700ES and 2400ES tankless water heaters.

For those who want to vent out of the side wall, the AQ3ES Horizontal Vent Kit has all of the parts needed (based on the assumption that you are venting out of the same wall you have mounted the heater on).

In addition to the 90 degree elbow, wall thimble, and the intake/exhaust termination boxes, this Z-Flex 3" stainless steel vent kit comes with enough vent pipe to meet the minimum three feet requirement. The Bosch warranty requires that all exhaust systems have at least three feet of straight vent pipe.

The ES VVT Vertical Vent Kit has all of the parts needed to vent up through the roof (except for the straight pipe). You will need enough straight pipe to get you three feet above your roofline.

The ES VVT Vent Kit comes with flashing, storm collar and rain cap for the roof line as well as a fire stop support, a stick of pipe, a 90 degree elbow, a vertical drain tee and a drain tube kit.

Lastly, the AQOK Outdoor Vent Kit turns the Bosch 2700ES/2400ES heaters into Outdoor Tankless Water Heaters. The AQOK Vent Kit bolts right on top of the heater to properly channel the makeup (combustion) air and the exhaust. The AQOK also prevents rain from getting into the tankless water heater.

With three venting options, the Bosch AquaStar 2700ES and Bosch AquaStar 2400ES heaters have the most versatility on the market!

PowerStar Tankless Electric Water Heaters

The PowerStar Electric Tankless Water Heaters are designed for "point of use" applications, meaning sinks and other low(er) flow water applications. There are four models of these tankless heaters, the AE3.4, AE7.2, AE9.5 and AE12. The numbers designate the kw or kilowatt rating of the unit. The AE3.4 runs on 120 volts but the AE7.2, AE9.5 and AE12 need 240/220/208 volts for useable operation.

None of these heaters comes with a plug so they need to be HARD WIRED back to an electrical panel due to their amperage requirements. A standard circuit within a home is 15 amps for a 120 volt circuit. The AE3.4 requires 30 amps, so it can not be "plugged in". The AE3.4 can only really be used in warm weather climates where the inlet water is at least 65 or warmer. The AE3.4 will raise the water temperature flowing through the heater 20 degrees at a flow rate of 1 gpm. So, if you are starting with 70 degrees the outlet temperature will be 90. If the flow rate is .5 gpm, then the outlet temperature change will be 40 degrees.

The AE7.2 is also a 30 amp unit but utilizes 240 volts thus it has twice the power of the AE3.4. At a flow rate of 1 gpm, the unit will provide about a 45 degree change in the water temperature. This unit may still not be "big" enough for cold weather climates if the inlet temperatures are 50 thus the outlet temperature would be 90. This is good for washing hands but not much else. Please note that the AE3.4, AE7.2 and AE9.5 do NOT have a knob or dial to control outlet temperature. The AE12 does have a temperature control though.

The AE9.5 is also a 240/220/208 unit and will provide about a 60 degree change at a 1 gpm flow rate and the heater requires 40 amps to operate. This unit is usually the best fit for most point of use applications.

The AE12 Power Stream tankless heater is the "largest" in terms of KW in the family. Please note that all the heaters are identical in physical size. The AE12 can provide a temperature change of 40 degrees at 2 gpm and a 65-70 degree change at 1 gpm. This unit can possibly be used with low flow showers in a warmer weather location.

When dealing with electrical tankless heaters, the input voltage is very important. The heaters are rated based on a full 240 volts. If the input voltage is less than 240 then the wattage will be reduced thus the output temperatures will be reduced. This is NOT a linear function. For example, if the voltage is cut in half, then the wattage will be 1/4 of the rated kw and the performance will be reduced by 4 times. It is important to have an electrician measure your actual voltage and to review your panel capacity when installing any Electric Tankless Heater including the Power Stream Point of Use heaters.

Bosch AquaStar 1600H versus 1600P

Bosch currently has two 1600 series tankless water heaters in the lineup: the Bosch AquaStar 1600H and the Bosch AquaStar 1600P.

Both of these Bosch tankless water heaters deliver 4.3 GPM at a 45 degree F temperature rise. They both have a gas control that modulates the burner input in response to flow. The BTU input on both water heaters is between 30,735 and 117,000 BTU input.

They both are designed to be vented vertically using 5" diameter Type B Galvanized venting. Globaltowne sells the H/P VVT Vertical Vent Kit to help with this vertical venting. Alternatively, both can be vented through the side wall with the AQ4 Power Vent.

The main difference between the 1600H and the 1600P is the ignition system. The Bosch AquaStar 1600H uses Bosch's patented Hydro Ignition system. This iginition system has no pilot light and no electrical requirement. The Bosch 1600H comes in two models:

Bosch 1600H-NG (Natural Gas)
Bosch 1600H-LP (Liquid Propane)

The Bosch 1600P has a standing pilot light for its ignition system. The Bosch 1600P also comes in two models:

Bosch 1600P-NG (Natural Gas)
Bosch 1600P-LP (Liquid Propane)

Although the Bosch 1600H costs more than the 1600P, the 1600H should save you a lot of money over its lifetime as it is not constantly burning gas for a pilot light. Some customers, however, prefer the lower cost of the 1600P. Also, some of our customers who live in very remote locations prefer the 1600P over the 1600H due to its lower mechanical complexity.

Both are very solid heaters with great reputations!

ARISTON Mini-Tank Heaters

The ARISTON GL heaters are NOT tankless water heaters.

The GL2.5, GL4.0 and GL6+ heaters are small tank heaters with the numbers in their part number signifing their capacity in gallons. This is not a GPM rating. All three heaters use a 120 volt 1500 watt electric element to heat the water. Thus all the heaters will draw about 12.5 amps. All the heaters come with about a 3 foot long cord and plug. Globaltowne does sell a GFCI extension cord for use with the GL series if the 3 feet is not long enough.

The GL series is excellent for stand alone sinks. Also it can be used inline with a tankless heater or tank heater to provide instant hot water at a shower while waiting for the hot water to "arrive" from the main heater.

Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heaters

Bosch offers two Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heaters: the PowerStar AE125 and the PowerStar AE115.

A perfect alternative to the electric tank water heater, the PowerStar electric tankless water heaters are designed to replace a 40-gallon tank and provide endless hot water throughout the home.

These compact water heaters (15.5" x 15.25" x 4.5") will fit just about anywhere and are built to last!

The AE125 provides 4 GPM at a 45 degree F temperature rise. It is a single phase 27kW heater running on 240 volts. It requires 3 x 40 AMP breakers and Bosch recommends a minimum 200 AMP service to your house.

The AE115 provides 2.6 GPM at the same 45 degree F temperature rise. It is a single phase 17kW heater running on 240 volts. It requires 2 x 40 AMP breakers and Bosch recommends a minimum 150 AMP service to your house.

Bosch has provided the following map as a guideline to where the AE115 should be installed:

When the AE125 is installed in Canada the AE Canada Kit is needed. The AE Canada Kit for the PowerStar AE125 is a 6 way terminal block for use when installing the AE125 in Canada. In Canada, the AE125 requires a 120A 240V AC single phase supply protected by a 120A double pole circuit breaker.

Bosch Outdoor Tankless Water Heaters

Bosch offers four outdoor tankless water heaters that are approved for areas where it does not regularly freeze. The heaters are equipped with electric freeze protection down to 5 degrees F above zero and are capable of withstanding an occasional overnight freeze.

The following Bosch outdoor tankless water heaters come with this freeze protection:

Bosch AquaStar 2700ES-LP / Bosch AquaStar 2700ES-NG
Bosch AquaStar 2400ES-LP / Bosch AquaStar 2400ES-NG
Bosch AquaStar 125BO -LP / Bosch AquaStar 125BO-NG
Bosch GWH 425HNO-L / Bosch GWH 425HNO-N

LP stands for Liquid Propane and NG stands for Natural Gas.

In order for the Bosch 2700ES and 2400ES heaters to be installed outdoors they must have the Bosch AQOK outdoor vent kit. This optional vent kit attaches to the top of the heater and prevents water from getting into the heater.

The Bosch 125BO and the GWH 425 HNO do not need any additional accessories in order to be installed outdoors. Please note that while the Bosch 125BO and the GWH 425 HNO outdoor tankless water heaters come with 110 Volt plugs, these heaters do not have to be plugged in unless you desire the freeze protection. The Bosch 125BO has a pilot light and the GWH 425HNO uses Bosch's patented Hydro Ignition system.

Bosch has approved these four outdoor heaters for the following areas of the United States:

Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Virginia (only in zip codes beginning with the first three digits 233-237), Arizona (in zip codes beginning with the first three digits 850-857 and 864), Oregon (in zip codes beginning with the first three digits 970-975), Washington (in zip codes beginning with the first three digits 980-986), California (except in zip codes beginning with the first three digits 935 or 961).

Some people install these outdoor tankless water heaters for their summer homes or cabins in areas of the US and Canada that do freeze. When these heaters are installed in freezing locations the water heaters must be completely drained so that the heat exchanger and pipes do not burst. The Bosch warranty does not cover damage due to freezing.

The WebStone Isolation Valve Kits really make the task of draining these outdoor tankless water heaters easy, so they are especially recommended for this application.

There are two big advantages to going with an outdoor tankless water heater:

The water heater does not take up any space inside of your home; and

There is no venting required, thus reducing both parts and installation costs.

One possible disadvantage, however, is that you may have to pay an extra installation cost to get the gas line and water lines run to your installation point outdoors.

Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES Condensation and Rain Strategies

The Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES tankless water heaters do NOT come with built-in condensation drains.

The Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES Installation Manuals states that the Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES tankless water heaters requires the installation of an external condensate drain for:

ALL vertically terminating vent installations;
All Horizontal terminating vent installations where the total vent length is greater than 10 feet; or
Vent installations where any section of the exhaust vent pipe passes through an unconditioned space

Bosch recommends to install the condensate drain as close to the heater as possible.

There are three 3" Z-Flex Z-Vent condensation drain parts that you can choose from:

Each of these will require a Condensate Drain Kit (2SVEDTK24).

The 3" Vertical Condensation Drain Tee (2SVEVWCF03) acts as a 90 degree elbow and is the best choice for catching condensation and rain as it has a large reservoir.

Not all horizontal installations have an opportunity to use the 3" Vertical Condensation Drain Tee and they should therefore use the 3" Horizontal Condensation Drain Pipe (2SVEDWCF03) to replace a straight section of pipe.

The 3" Vertical Condensation Drainpipe (2SVEVDP03) has the least capacity for removing condensation and rain. It should be used as a last resort and only when 3" venting goes literally straight up from the heater. It is preferable to offset the Bosch 2400E from the vertical vent pipe and use the 3" Vertical Condensation Drain Tee (as a 90 degree elbow) along with an actual 90 degree elbow.

If you must go straight up from the Bosch 2700ES / 2400ES / 2400E heaters, we recommend that you use the 3" to 4" Increaser (2SVSI0304) and then run 4" Z-Flex Z-Vent venting. This will allow you to use the larger 4" Vertical Condensation Drainpipe (2SVEVDP04). This 4" drainpipe has a much higher capacity for removing condensation and rain than does the 3" drainpipe.
