The Bosch AQ1 side wall power vent kit has now been discontinued for several years. It is now completely unavailable. The AQ1 vent kit was used for Bosch AquaStar 125B tankless water heaters that were vented horizontally out the side wall.
The current replacement for the Bosch AquaStar 125B is the Bosch Therm 520PN. The 520 PN uses the AQ4 side wall power vent kit for all horizontal venting installations. No power vent kit is required when venting the 520 series tankless water heaters vertically up through the roof.
The AQ4 cannot be used as a substitute side wall vent kit for any Aqua Star125 tankless water heaters. The Bosch AQ4 can only be used for the Bosch Therm 520 series and the older Bosch 1600 series tankless water heaters.

Vertically constructed vent stack along the outside of the home
It is not permissible to vent a naturally drafting gas tankless water heater such as the Bosch 520HN, 520PN, 1600H, 1600P, 330PN or the 1000P out and up the side wall of the home. This is not safe as the exposed venting running up the side of the home will be exposed to the elements and cold. When the temperature outside gets cold and makes the vent stack cold then the exhaust gases from the Bosch tankless water heater will not properly draft to the outside and can fill the home with carbon monoxide.
The installation manual states: "Horizontally venting to a vertically constructed vent stack along an outside wall of a building is not permissible". This is also against the National Fuel Gas Code (NFGC). If a Bosch tankless water heater needs to be vented Horizontally out the sidewall of the building then you would be required to use the Bosch AQ4 Powervent Kit. The AQ4 power vent kit is designed to activate when the tankless water heater comes on and blow the exhaust gases outside. The Bosch AQ4 power vent kit can be used with the Bosch 520HN, 520PN, 1600H and the 1600P. The Bosch 330PN and 1000P cannot be power-vented and must be vented vertically up through the roof of the building.
This rule for venting up the outside of the building also applies to the older Bosch Aquastar 125 series heaters and the ELM VP heaters. For older gas tankless water heaters that were installed and vented up the outside of the building they would want to have a chase built around them and box the venting in. Please always be aware of the minimum venting clearances for all venting material. Please see the before and after pictures below of a vent stack running up the outside of the home.

Venting requirement for Bosch AQ4 Powervent Kit
The Bosch AQ4 Powervent Kit with built-in freeze protection is designed for the Bosch 1600H (Hydro Ignition) and 1600P (Pilot) tankless water heaters. This accessory allows the Bosch 1600H and 1600P tankless heaters to vent horizontally out the sidewall of the home. The AQ4 does require power to operate and operates on 120V and comes with a 3' cord to plug into the outlet.
The AQ4 is a power vent kit and will allow a horizontal vent run of up to 25 feet with one elbow (subtract 5 feet for every elbow). This kit includes the power vent motor. There is also a vent hood with damper that gets mounted on the outside of the home and this built in flapper prevents the cold air from coming in when the heater is not in use. Please make sure to refer to the installation manual and that the hood is properly installed so that the flapper stays closed all the way when not in use.
The AQ4 powervent kit comes with a 5" to 4" reducer. This reducer fits right on top of the heater and then you would use 4" type B, C or stainless steel AL29-4C venting (not included) to go to the powervent motor. There is a minimum of 2 feet of straight pipe required between the reducer and the blower motor. Any venting (if needed) "after" the powervent motor must be 4" sealed stainless steel AL29-4C. The Blower motor should be placed right at the opening where the termination hood with damper is to be installed on the sidewall of the home.
The AQ4 powervent kit is activated by a flow switch and gets attached to the cold water pipe on the right side of the unit just before it goes into the heat exchanger.
The blower motor for the AQ4 has a new design and includes a delay setting that goes from #1 - #5 and this lets the installer set the blower motor so that when it senses flow it can be delayed for 1 - 5 seconds before the blower comes on. This will help to ensure the pilot and burners light without getting sucked out by the blower motor.
There is also a built in safety spill switch that gets attached to the tankless water heater and this will detect high temperatures from any flue gases in the case the blower motor does not activate and will shut the unit completely down.

Flow & Temperature Adjustment for Bosch 1600P
The new Bosch 1600P that comes in either natural gas or liquid propane has a control knob for adjusting the flow and a slide adjustment for adjusting the heat on the front of the heater.
The Bosch AquaStar 1600P is a 117,000 BTU Gas Tankless Water Heater. The control knob on the right is the Temperature Adjustment knob and is for adjusting the flow of water through the heater which has the ability to speed the flow of water up making it cooler or slowing it down and making it hotter. The slide control in the middle is for adjusting the temperature of of the water by adjusting the height of the flame. When the slide is positioned on the small flame symbol the burners will be low and when the slide is on the high flame symbol the burners will get higher and the temperature hotter.

As the temperature adjustment knob is turned counter-clockwise, the output temperature will lower and the activation rate of the heater will be raised. Turning the knob clockwise will raise the temperature and lower the activation rate.
When sliding the slide adjustment to the left small flame will give lower flame and cooler temperatures and sliding the slide to the right will give hotter tenmperatures and a higher flame.

The Bosch 1600P has a gas control slide that modulates burner input in response to flow. Its purpose is to ensure that the hot water temperature will remain steady, although the water flow demand might vary.

Flappers for AQ1 and AQ4 Power Vent Kits
Both the Bosch AQ1 and AQ4 power vent kits now come with the flappers installed from the factory. In the past the flapper came separately and the Installer had to assemble it.

Bosch 1600H with AQ4 vs. Bosch 125FX with FXHood
If you have just one shower and are looking to vent out of the sidewall, Bosch currently offers two tankless water heater solutions.
The Bosch AquaStar 125FX Propane tankless water heater is a 125,000 BTU input tankless water heater (130,000 BTU for Natural Gas model) that has an electronic ignition system. The 125FX comes with a side-wall vent kit called the FX Hood. This heater is designed to be vented out of the side wall and it cannot be vented up through the roof. The 125FX requires electricity to power the electronic ignition and FXHood.
The Bosch AquaStar 1600H is a 117,000 BTU input tankless water heater that is designed to be vented up through the roof. It uses Bosch's patented Hydro ignition system that automatically starts the ignition process when it senses the flow of water. The Bosch 1600H does not require electricity nor does it have a battery. It also has NO PILOT LIGHT. It does require a 5" diameter Type B double-walled vent of at least 6 feet in height when vented vertically.
The Bosch 1600H can be vented through the side wall using the AQ4 Vent Kit. However, please note that the AQ4 Horizontal Vent Kit DOES require electricity. (The AQ4 Vent Kit can also be used for the Bosch 1600P tankless water heater.)
In summary, Bosch offers two solid tankless water heater options for single shower homes requiring side wall venting.
