Bosch AquaStar Universal Hydro Generator

The Bosch Universal Hydro Generator, part number 8707406104 (87074061040 or 8-707-406-104-0) is designed to work with all newer Bosch Therm 520HN tankless water heaters as well as all older model hydro generated units.  The universal hydro generator comes with miscellaneous water pipes, gaskets and bushings to adapt to the older units. The hydro generator works with water flow and has a small wheel that spins when the water starts to flow. The small wheel inside has a magnet on it that when spinning produces a certain amount of mili volts that is transferred through a couple wires to the ignition unit and that in turn lets the ignition unit light the pilot and then the main burner.  There is no need for any electrical power to operate the heater.
The older units that would require the universal hydro generator are the Bosch model 125HX, 425HN, 425HNO, 1600H and the Bosch WR400 series heater WR400-7K V1G23S3195.  The new universal Hydro Generator part replaces all older hydrogenerators such as 8707406043 (87074060430 or 8-707-406-043-0), 8707426026 (87074260260 or 8-707-426-026-0), 8707406059 (87074060590 or 8-707-406-059-0), 8707406069 (87074060690 or 8-707-406-069-0), 8707406095 (87074060950 or 8-707-406-095-0) and 8707406071 (87074060710 or 8-707-406-071-0).

3" Z-Flex Stainless Steel Venting for Marey 16L ETL Tankless Water Heater

GlobalTowne carries all the 3" stainless steel Z-Flex venting needed for venting the Marey 16L ETL tankless water heater.  The Marey 16L ETL gas tankless water heater must be vented with 3" single wall stainless steel venting.  Please be sure that when installing the Marey 16L ETL that you start with the 3" Universal Adapter part number 2SVSNA03.5 on top of the heater.  The universal adapter makes for a much easier installation and is needed for attaching the 3" stainless steel venting.

The Marey 16L ETL is a direct vent unit and must be vented to the outside.  The Marey 16L ETL cannot be common vented or vented into a chimney.  The Marey 16L ETL can be vented horizontally out the sidewall or vertical up through the roof.  If venting horizontal out the sidewall make sure to angle the venting a 1/4" per foot.  When venting vertical up through the roof you must use a Vertical Condensate Drain Tee part number 2SVEVWCF03 and a Condensate Drain Tube Kit 24" part number 2SVEDTK24.

Replacing a Bosch Aquastar 125FX with a Bosch Therm 830ES

The older Bosch Aquastar model 125FX came in either Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP) and was 117,000 BTU and was a direct vent unit that was good for one major application at a time.  The 125FX had electronic ignition and was fan-assisted and took its combustion air from the room it was installed in.  The heater had a built-in fan so the heater could be vented right out the sidewall of the building.  The Aquastar 125FX had to be vented with 4" sealed stainless steel venting going a maximum of 15' out the sidewall of the building into the FXHood.  The FX Hood was a termination hood specifically designed for the 125FX and had a built-in flapper to keep cold air from penetrating the vent pipe and freezing the heater.  The Bosch Aquastar 125FX is discontinued now and has not been made for over 8 years or so.  One of the closest replacement models for the 125FX would be the new Bosch Therm 830ES.
Bosch Therm 830ES
The new Bosch 830ES comes in either Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP) and is 175,000 BTU which is slightly more BTUs than the older 125FX.  The Bosch 830ES needs a minimum of a 3/4" gas line and has 3/4" water connections also.  The 830ES is a sealed unit and takes its intake air from the outside using 3" PVC.  The unit is vented to the outside using 3" Stainless steel venting and this could be attached to the FX Hood that is already in place using a 3" to 4" increaser (Z-Flex Part #2SVSI0304).  The 830ES is digitally controlled and can go from 100 - 140 degrees F.  See below for more specifications and capacity.

Outdoor Installation of Bosch 330PN, 520PN & 520HN

In past years, Bosch had always had naturally drafting gas tankless water heaters that were specifically designed for the outdoors.  The 117,000 BTU Bosch 125BO and 425HNO outdoor units were designed for outdoor use; however, they were discontinued about three years ago.  The Bosch 125BO and the 425HNO did not require any power to operate and were naturally drafting. They also did not require any venting. (These heaters did come with a power cord, but the power cord was only to provide for freeze protection and was not required for the regular operation of the water heater.)

The only outdoor Bosch tankless water heaters that are currently available are direct vent units and they require power to operate and have a special outdoor vent cap (BTOK) to protect them from the elements.  These specific outdoor units also have built-in freeze protection that is good for ambient freezes for short periods of time.

Bosch does still offer three different naturally drafting gas tankless water heaters that do not require any power to operate and are intended for indoor use but can be installed outside under special situations. The Bosch 330PN, Bosch 520PN and the Bosch 520HN are all naturally drafting units that require no power to operate.  These units come in either Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP).

These units can be mounted outside if they are well protected from the elements and are able to get plenty of combustion air when in operation (See Image below of Bosch 330PN LP installed outdoors on a tree).  The 75,000 BTU Bosch Therm 330PN and the 117,000 BTU Bosch Therm 520PN and 520HN tankless water heaters will not be covered under any manufacturer's warranty if the unit freezes or if the heater gets damaged by rain.  Bosch Thermotechnology may void any warranty for the heater at their discretion as the Bosch 330PN, 520PN and the 520HN are intended for indoor applications.

This photo shows the Bosch 330PN-LP installed in a protected case with a sloped roof. The case is open on the bottom to allow for the easy flow of make-up air.

This photo shows the 330PN-LP from the front view with a hinge on the custom-built case that allows for easy access to the tankless water heater's controls.

Venting a Bosch Therm 330PN into an Existing Chimney

The Bosch Therm 330PN is a naturally drafting gas tankless water heater and must be vented to the outside using a minimum of a 4" diameter galvanized type B gas vent.  Under no circumstances should the vent pipe be reduced in size.  There must be a minimum of a 12" rise off the top of the heater before any 45's or 90 degree elbows.  If there is to be a horizontal section before going into the chimney then try and keep it as short as possible.  The maximum horizontal run allowed is half of the total vertical vent height.  45's, 90 degree elbows and any horizontal length is not to be considered in the total gas vent height.

The Chimney the Bosch 330 PN tankless water heater is venting into must be the only thing going into the chimney.  The galvanized type B gas vent must run all the way up the chimney to an approved rain cap.  The minimum vertical vent height is 6 ft and any horizontal vent connectors or elbows are not to be considered in the total gas vent height.  All gas vent sections of pipe must be screwed together with sheet metal screws and properly supported.  The Bosch 330 PN may be vented into the chimney alone as long as it is lined with the correct tile or metal ling.  Consult local codes for proper lining of chimney.  You may not vent any other fuel burning appliances into any free space remaining in the chimney.  Please see the illustration below for venting into the chimney and always follow the instructions listed in the installation manual for the heater.

A = Minimum of 6 ft. rise
1.  Listed approved Rain Cap
2.  Horizontal vent connection rising 1/4" per ft.
3.  Establish a 12" rise before any elbows

Venting a Bosch Therm 520PN or 520HN into an Existing Chimney

The Bosch Therm 520PN and Bosch Therm 520HN are both naturally drafting gas tankless water heaters and must be vented to the outside using a minimum of a 5" diameter galvanized type B gas vent.  6" diameter type B gas vent is required for all installations over 2,000 ft above sea level.

The Chimney the Bosch tankless water heater is venting into must be the only thing going into the chimney. The masonry chimney may have to be tile or metal lined before the insertion of the gas vent pipe.  Consult local codes for proper lining of chimney.  You may not vent any other fuel burning appliances into any free space remaining in the chimney.  Please see the illustration below for venting into the chimney and always follow the instructions listed in the installation manual for the heater.
A = Minimum of 6 ft. rise
1.  Listed approved Rain Cap
2.  Horizontal vent connection rising 1/4" per ft.

Bosch Gas & Electric Residential Tankless Water Heaters 2015 NAECA Standards

The U.S. Department of Energy has increased the energy factor requirements for residential water heaters effective April 16th, 2015 through the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA).

This update of regulations will affect all manufacturers selling residential water heaters in the U.S. Residential water heaters include storage type units that store heated water in an insulated tank and instantaneous type units that heat water on demand.

These standards only apply to gas fired storage (<=75 kBTU/h input), oil-fired storage (<=105 kBTU/h input), tabletop storage (<=12kW input), all electric (<=12kW input), and instantaneous gas (<200 h="" input="" kbtu="" p="">

Impact of NAECA standards:
Increased Energy Factor ratings on almost all residential water heater technologies and sizes will impact manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors, and end users.

Impact on Products:
Gas tankless water heaters:  Increased Energy Factor requirements will only allow models with EF 0.82 and over to be manufactured as of April 16th. Models operating at or over EF 0.82 will not be affected. Most of Bosch’s tankless water heaters fall in this category of EF over 0.82.

Impact on Wholesalers and Contractors:
These NAECA regulations will affect wholesalers and contractors and it is important to note these forthcoming changes. Tankless products may be a more suitable alternative in certain applications. Tank-type gas water heaters >55 gal. may require line voltage and condensate disposal. In addition, HPWH technology will be required in electric tank-type >55 gal.

AQ1 Powervent Kit Obsolete

The Bosch AQ1 Powervent kit is now obsolete.  This powervent kit was designed and used for the older Bosch models:  125VP/170VP/125B/125HX/125X/125BS and 125BL heaters.

Bosch still has some parts in stock for the AQ1 powervent kit such as the Blower motor part #7738001022. Stock for the individual parts for the AQ1 powervent kit will only be available for a limited time as supplies last.  Please call us at 888-726-9752 for pricing and availability for individual parts.

Bosch replaced the AQ1 powervent kit with the newer AQ4 Powervent Kit and this new powervent kit will only work with the following Bosch tankless water heaters:  1600P/1600H/520PN/520HN.  The Bosch AQ4 powervent kit is different than the older AQ1 powervent kit and operates with a flow switch to activate the blower motor instead of the gas pressure switch in the older AQ1.
